Parts of the UK are once again basking in the summer sunshine, and the Met Office has issued an amber warning for large areas of England and Wales where temperatures might exceed 30C.

While many people will be making the most of the weather and taking the chance to head outside for some sunbathing and a BBQ, we also need to be careful under such conditions, especially those most vulnerable.

Of course, this isn’t the first weather warning we’ve had this summer – just a few weeks ago an amber warning escalated to the first-ever red warning – and we’ve had some experience of tackling the heat.

Along with their forecast, the Met Office also published some handy advice on how to keep cool and look after others during extreme weather. You can read the full article here, but talking specifically about driving, they quoted RAC Breakdown spokesman Rod Dennis who said:

“An amber warning for extreme heat over such a wide area is rare and as a result we strongly urge drivers in England and Wales to think carefully before they drive, and do everything they can to avoid a breakdown. This starts with checking the coolant and oil levels under the bonnet when the engine is cold. Oil should be topped up if it’s low, and if coolant isn’t between the ‘min’ and ‘max’ levels then drivers should top it up – or take it to a reputable garage to get it checked without delay.”

So the best advice is, if you have to drive, be prepared. He adds that:

“Anyone who has to take to the roads in these temperatures should ensure they carry plenty of water with them and an additional camping-style water carrier is a good idea so they can top up as needed, and keep their passengers as cool and comfortable as possible too. Starting journeys early in the morning or later in the evening is also a good idea, to avoid the hottest parts of the day.”
