Summer is coming, which is great news for everyone counting down the days until we get some sunshine - especially those who drive a convertible.

But it also brings a new set of challenges for drivers looking to keep their wheels in top shape. Unlike the winter months, there are a few key things we need to keep on top of during the hotter half of the year, and here’s a checklist of seven top tips to keep you on the road.

Start things off by getting your vehicle gleaming. A good wash is needed not just for aesthetic reasons but because all that dirt and grime accumulated during the darker months can degrade your vehicle in the heat. To be extra safe, add a layer of wax.

Tyre pressure is important all year round, but in summer you need to pay extra attention because the warm weather can reduce it, leading to two problems: increased fuel usage and a potential blow out.

You can check the pressure yourself or take it to a garage, and it’s worth having a look at the tread at the same time which can also be affected by the weather.

service the air con - and everything else

Don’t leave it too late to get the air con serviced – the last thing you want to do is be caught out in a heatwave. Your local garage can do this quick enough, usually as part of a regular service if you’re due, and remember some air cons might need to be regassed – be sure to get professional help if needed to do this also.

is the coolant topped up?

The name alone is a clue that a coolant can be handy when it’s hot outside because the last thing you want is the car overheating in the sun. Lift up the bonnet and check the levels – you could have a quick look at the oil and window washer at the same time.

park in the shade where possible and keep moving

Keeping your car cool can be as easy as parking in the right place. Stop in the shade where possible and, if that’s tricky, you can always invest in covers or windscreen covers. The heat can cause all manner of problems, from fading the paint and melting plastic components, plus it’s pretty uncomfortable driving in a car that’s been heated up like a microwave.

This also applies to idling in the car, which can overheat in long queues of traffic or waiting outside a supermarket. Turn off the engine whenever possible to give it a breather.

check the battery

The battery is one part of the vehicle that you need to keep an eye on in the hot weather. Not only can it overheat, it can show visual signs of leaking and corroding. Check it for signs of wear and get professional advice if needed if something doesn’t look right.

prepare for emergencies

Finally, make sure you’ve got all the essentials in the car, whatever the emergency. As well as being prepared for a breakdown, there’s the extra worry of being stuck in a traffic jam during the sweaty holiday season to plan for.

An emergency kit should contain anything you might need at short notice like plasters and bandages, and you can also stash away backup drinks and food that can survive in the car. Fluids really are key to all journeys in the heat, and should be stored in a cool place like the glove box or even under the seats if needed. Keep hydrated!
